New Asia shipping alliances launch
The global container shipping industry is undergoing significant change, with new alliances reshaping trade flows and service networks.
The dissolution of the 2M Alliance between Maersk and MSC has given rise to four distinct groupings:
Gemini Cooperation (Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd)
Premier Alliance (ONE, Yang Ming, and HMM)
Ocean Alliance (CMA CGM, COSCO, and Evergreen) which is largely unchanged
MSC operating independently
These restructured alliances introduce new service models that will shape global shipping for years to come.
A key differentiator among the alliances is their network approach. Gemini Cooperation has embraced a hub-and-spoke model, where large vessels call at key central hubs before cargo is redistributed via regional feeder ships. This model prioritises schedule reliability and operational efficiency but may increase transshipment times.
Conversely, MSC has expanded its direct port-to-port services, minimising reliance on regional feeders. While this approach offers greater route flexibility, it also increases exposure to schedule disruptions, particularly in congested ports.
Service continuity for Ocean and Premier
For Ocean Alliance and Premier Alliance, the new structure brings minimal changes. Ocean Alliance has introduced an additional Far East–Europe service and included Yangpu, China, in two transpacific routes. Meanwhile, Premier has retained much of THE Alliance’s previous network, securing slot-sharing agreements with MSC to compensate for Hapag-Lloyd’s departure.
Raising the bar on schedule reliability
Gemini Cooperation has set an ambitious target of exceeding 90% schedule reliability—a significant improvement over the industry’s 2024 average of 50-55%. This is underpinned by its hub-and-spoke network, designed to provide a more predictable and consistent service experience.
At the core of Gemini’s operations is the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), which will serve as the primary hub for 20 Gemini strings, including all seven of its Asia-Europe services. By consolidating operations at PTP, Gemini aims to optimise transshipment efficiency and minimise delays.
However, the success of this model depends on PTP maintaining smooth operations and on third-party ports, such as London Gateway, accommodating Gemini’s vessels without congestion or berthing delays. Any disruptions in these ports could negatively affect the network’s performance, as seen in previous industry-wide challenges.
A key question remains: will shippers prioritise reliability over cost savings? While improved schedule adherence can reduce inventory holding costs, past attempts to introduce premium services have faced resistance due to cost sensitivity and market fragmentation.
Blanked sailings ease transition
To facilitate the transition between alliance structures, carriers have implemented blanked sailings—temporary capacity withdrawals from specific routes. This strategy helps smooth the handover while aligning with the seasonal demand dip following Lunar New Year.
February saw 166,402 TEUs of capacity removed through blanked sailings—over three times the reductions seen in January. The impact of these cancellations is expected to be most noticeable at European discharge ports, as vessels reroute around Africa. Currently, 12 blanked sailings have been recorded for week 11, with seven planned for week 12 and eight for week 13.
While these adjustments create short-term challenges, the revised alliance structures are expected to improve overall service consistency and efficiency in the long term.
